If you’re planning graduation photos or simply want timeless portraits, the University of Otago campus offers some of the most iconic and versatile backdrops in Dunedin. From historic architecture to stunning greenery every corner tells a story—and photographs beautifully.
Whether you want classic backdrops or unique spots that highlight the university’s charm, these locations will help you create lasting memories of your achievement.

In Front of the Clocktower
This is the must-have shot.
The Clock Tower is instantly recognisable and gives your photos that unmistakable Otago feel. Shooting directly in front of it creates a strong, symmetrical composition that feels polished and timeless.
University of Otago’s clocktower is one of the most recognisable landmarks on campus. Its Gothic Revival architecture provides a timeless and elegant backdrop for graduation photos. The clocktower’s intricate stonework and towering spire add a sense of grandeur and history to your images.
This is where we capture:
Classic graduation portraits
Family photos with a clean, iconic backdrop
That “frame-worthy” hero image
It’s a staple for a reason—simple, elegant, and always stunning.
I love to capture the clock tower from a few different locations, to capture a range of images at this iconic spot and make the most of the different landscapes the university of Otago has to offer, offering variety in your gallery.
What you need to know
We will start here making sure we get the most iconic shots first! Starting with individual shots of you, we will do a range of different poses depending on the session length you've booked for, we will also change up the props (i.e. with/without cap, flowers etc.). After this we'll slowly call family and friends in, finishing with our big group shots. P.S. In front of the clocktower is one of the best locations for big families!
The Bridge Over the Leith
The bridge crossing the Water of Leith is a charming and less formal spot for graduation photography. Surrounded by lush greenery and flowing water, this location offers a natural contrast to the university’s stone buildings. The bridge’s rustic design and the nearby trees create a peaceful atmosphere that works well for candid and relaxed photos.
This spot is ideal for graduates who want to show a softer, more personal side of their university experience.
What you need to know
This spot is second on our list and is honestly one of my favourites, the neutral greenery makes it an awesome spot to get some photos without your graduation gown, cape and hat aswell! This spot is ideal for individual shots and small group photos of up to 4 people. It's also the perfect spot to capture some candid photos of you and any family and friends.
The University Gate
The 3rd spot on our list is the stunning university gates, leading into quad. They offer a more dramatic bold look and in my opinion are another must - opening the gates to the next chapter of your life. They are iconic for University of Otago graduation photography!
This is another spot great for some individual shots, small group shots and big group shots. It's also perfect for an iconic cap throwing moment!
The gate works well for both solo portraits and group photos with friends or family. It’s also a great spot to include your graduation cap toss or other celebratory moments.
Quad
The quad is one of the most versatile spots on campus offering a big range of backdrops and scenery.
First up is my favourite spot for a celebratory cap throw, stunning portrait or candid shots with friends and family. The tree at the entrance of the quad offers beautiful soft lighting and a spacious open area, with lush greenery that highlights you. This is also another great spot if you were wanting any pictures without your grad attire.

As we walk further into quad, we will find places perfect for candid walking shots, family photos and portraits. The rich architecture and historic building perfectly reflect the University of Otago's heritage feel.
Pathway outside the Clocktower
Our final spot is directly outside the clocktower, offering the perfect spot for walking photos with friends and family to show off your achievement! This spot offers a wide walkway with a mix of classic Otago architecture and rich greenery, making it the perfect spot to finish our session!
Extra Locations
For longer sessions I'm always happy to add in extra locations off or around campus, including the spots that meant the most to you during your study at Otago University. This can really elevate your gallery.
Just make sure to let me know when booking your session to make sure we have enough time
Bringing It All Together
The magic isn’t just in one location—it’s in how we move between them to create a gallery that feels full, balanced, and uniquely yours.
By using a mix of these spots, you’ll end up with:
Iconic, must-have images
Natural, candid moments
A variety of backdrops and styles
So your final gallery doesn’t just look good—it feels complete.
